Our Veterinary Careteam

Hospital Manager, Registered Veterinary Technician

Hi, I’m Janice and I am proud to be the hospital manager and head technician at Big Bay Animal Hospital.  I have lived in Barrie for the past 20 years since graduating from McMaster University with a degree in Animal and Medical Biology.  After having worked in retail for a number of years, I wanted to get back to my science and animal roots and spent a summer working as a zookeeper at the African Lion Safari.  I was hooked.  I returned to school and completed my Veterinary Technician diploma at Seneca College in 2000.

I helped establish the  Big Bay Animal Hospital as it’s very first staff member and haven’t looked back since.  My love of animals and my dedication to my profession as a Registered Veterinarian Technician has brought me great joy and great travels.  In my quest for knowledge, I have spent a month in Africa as a Vet Tech and continue my learning at annual conferences in Las Vegas.

I love meeting our new clients and their pets and helping to establish your bond to our hospital. Some of you may have met my furry family member, my Golden Retriever Marlie, who helps me cheer on our favorite hockey team–the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I look forward to helping all of our clients and their furry family have a truly wonderful experience at Big Bay Animal Hospital, where we treat you like members of our family.

Head Client Relation Specialist

I made a big move with my family from Northern B.C. to Barrie when I was 7 years old and have lived here ever since.  Going to school for legal administration I soon realized that was not where my heart truly was.  I needed to work with animals and so I began my career in a clinic 13 years ago.  I have been a part of the Big Bay team since September 2003 and enjoy greeting you and your four legged family member as you walk through the door.

As one of the client service representatives, I am happy to treat your pet with cookies or love to start their visit off just right.  In my spare time I can be found hanging out with my dog Destiny, snuggling with our 2 cats Weiner and Jax, and of course family time with my husband Scott and son Ryley.

Exam room Veterinary Technician

It is my real pleasure to care for you at Big Bay Animal Hospital.

As your Appointment Technician, I will assist you throughout the examination process.  You will receive education on nutrition, dental health care, diagnostic services and parasite prevention.

I originated from Portugal Cove, a seashore community on the eastern coast of Newfoundland.  As a wee girl my favorite companions were stray cats and dogs.  I remember feeling such compassion for their welfare.

In 1989, I moved to Toronto to begin my education and career as an Animal Health Technician.  My credentials include McLean AHT program, The Cat Hospital of Toronto and University of Guelph.

Feline medicine intrigues me.  I have a genuine adoration for feline behavior and understanding of their unique personality.

I enjoy an active lifestyle with my husband Darren and our two awesome kids Dylan and Emily.  As a family we are involved with karate, baseball, piano and art.  Running is my favorite pastime.

Our feline companions include Gilligan, a Cornish Rex cat. He is a silly clown of a boy and brings a smile to me every day.  Gigi Bella is my little princess.  She is a domestic long haired cat. She has a disorder, Hemophilia, so each moment with her is a gift.

Whether it be a nail trim or a cuddle; it is my objective that your pet receive the gold standard in veterinary care and enjoy a positive experience.

Veterinary Assistant

We have the “ginger” quota covered at Big Bay Animal Hospital.  Selina has relocated from Newfoundland with her Military husband and their 10 furry family members.  Selina’s bubbly personality is a joy here at the clinic and she will provide all the TLC your pet requires away from home while they are here in the hospital.

She helps out all over the clinic so you will see her bopping from the front to the back to keep your pets comfortable, happy and assist in any way possible.

Please welcome Shasta to our Veterinary team.

Shasta joins Big Bay Animal Hospital as a Registered Veterinary Technician and Surgical nurse.  She will ensure your pets stay in the hospital is a comfortable and safe one.  Taking care of our surgical patients, she is responsible for their anesthesia, monitoring and nursing care.  She has a passion for nutrition too, so she will help you choose the best food for your pet.

Shasta graduated from the Georgian College Veterinary technician program in 2008 and was awarded the Graduating class nursing award that year.

She is a local girl, growing up in the Tiny beaches area before moving to Barrie at the age of 18.  She can now be found raising her 3 year old son Wyatt with her husband Brian and their 2 cats; Mya and Wookie.  In her free time (really with a 3 year old we are not sure how much free time she has) she enjoys gardening, camping and of course the Beach.  Anything summer really.

Stop by and say hello to Shasta soon.

Sarah B

Client Relation Specialist

I joined the team at Big Bay Animal Hospital in October of 2014 and you will find me at the reception desk as one of the client service representatives.  My husband and I have recently bought a house in Barrie since we love the city, so we decided to establish ourselves in the community.  I love it here at Big Bay as the girls are all so nice and the clients are wonderful!  I look forward to each day meeting new furry faces and helping you with any questions and concerns you may have.

I have been working in the vet field now for over 15 years.  I changed my career path from Art History to the Veterinary field when I decided to follow my true passion after my dog Harley died of diabetes at 15 years old.  I went to Durham College where I took Animal care courses and from there worked at a clinic in Newmarket for 10 years, eventually working my way up to Clinic Manager.  After that I worked at an Emergency clinic in Toronto but found myself wanting once again to work in small practice where you are able to develop a personal and lifelong bond with the client and animals.

I currently live in Keswick with my husband and our two furr children, a calico DLH cat named Monkey and a Golden Retriever rescue named Izzy.  In our spare time we enjoy spending weekends at the cottage, paddle boarding, camping and checking out the great city of Barrie.

Clinic Cat extraodinaire & Food Sampler

I joined the Big Bay Animal Hospital’s team in 2011.  I was previously in foster care in the Furry Friends organization, where I was greatly loved, but I had an issue with my urine and wasn’t able to pee, Big Bay Animal Hospital fixed me right up and I’ve been great ever since.  I realized they needed a furry hospital greeter and that they would treat me like a king,  so I decided to stay.

I can be found on the front desk in my favorite corner, or observing surgery and the care of the animals in the treatment area of the clinic.  I enjoy watching the birds out the front window, and have been known to chase down a laser or bouncing ball.

I am a connoisseur of fine food–well really any food will do, I even love apples, bananas and other fruits and vegetables.

I am here to ensure your pets have a companion if they need to stay over and love to meet everyone when they come in our front door.  Please stop by and say hello, and don’t forget to check out my blog on this website.
