Why Does My Dog Have Soft Stool & Weight Loss?
One possible cause of soft stool and weight loss is an intestinal parasite called Giardia. Giardia is a common parasite found in the Barrie and surrounding area in any season at any temperature and can be found in all ages of dogs.
Where does it come from? Your dog can contract Giardia when they drink water that has been contaminated or is untreated. Ingestion of contaminated feces in water or other substances in the smallest amount is enough to give giardia a foothold in the body.
What does it do? Giardia resides in the small intestines of your dog and attaches itself to the inner surfaces and absorbing nutrients that they need, leading to diarrhea. When they reproduce, cysts pass in the feces to contaminate the environment and further spread infection.
Signs of infection? Many dogs show no signs, and you won’t be able to see it in your dog’s poop. Your dog may experience softer stools, chronic diarrhea or it may even cause your dog to lose weight.
Diagnosing? Giardia can be diagnosed by a fecal sample and if positive can be treated with a prescribed medication and/or antibiotics once they see the Veterinarian.
Don’t forget to bring in your dog’s poop sample today to ensure they are parasite free.
